I love this time of year, the weather turns warmer, the sun shines brighter, and the birds sing louder....and...oh yeah...the Relay For Life takes place in Columbus County! There is always so much to do to get ready for Relay behind the scenes, but when the day arrives we all get to participate in the activities and have a lot of fun! It's like a 24 hour Celebration!
This year will be no exception....a Silent Auction will be held at the committee tent....the opening ceremony will be a real moving time with the presentation of colors by the WHS JR ROTC and the national anthem being sung by FAZE 4 of WCHS followed by sky diver Bob Stephens in his yearly descent to mid field from the sky above....it's pretty cool to see. Several laps follow including the Survivor, Survivor/Caregiver Lap, and Team Banner laps. This year that will be followed by the Relay For Life Variety Show....this is new and, with the talent in our county, promises to be an exciting addition.
Several bands will be entertaining this year including The Carolina Ramblers, WCHS Jazz Band, Cedar Branch Band, Redemption Hill Band, and Occam's Razor Band! The WoMANless Ms. Relay pageant was held a couple of weeks ago, but the top three contestants will make an appearance at our Relay and perform their talent for the crowd!
The fun continues throughout the night with the Named Laps that let you know what to do....Theme Laps included are for School Spirit, Power of Purple, Favorite Sports Team, Pink Ribbon, Love Train, Lighting the way for a Cure, Pajama & Teddy Bear, Sunglass & Crazy hat or hair, Disco Fever, Conga, Hungry for a cure - snack attack lap, Patriotic, Zombies, Cancer Never Sleeps Lap, Oldest Relay Shirt, Bed-head, Noisemakers, Fiesta, Team Spirit & RFL Committee, Best Friends, and Skip for a Cure! All of these laps are helpful when you haven't' slept and help to keep the walkers entertained....it's amazing to see some of the ideas the teams come up with!
There are two laps for the Survivors as the event hosts them once again Saturday morning at 11:00 am. And Speaking of Saturday morning, this one promises to be fun filled hosting a Rooster Crow Contest, Sunrise Sing-a-long, and a Zumba Presentation! The kid's Carnival is held Saturday morning and includes the Kid's Walk, the Adorable Baby Contest, Relay Awards, and Winners of the previous nights Campsite judging, 1000 Club, Corporate Sponsor Presentation!
My favorite time at Relay happens at dusk when the Luminaries are lit up to burn through the night. This beautiful reminder to all of us of the number of people who fight cancer or have lost their battle with cancer in our lives light up the night for the crowd of people who have taken the time to come out and honor them. It's an amazing time in our County and we hope that you will come out and join us!
